しるしを踏み越える (Shirushi o Fumikoeru) Step Over the Sign 4 channel sound devices, 1/3 round concrete room, spotlights, & vinyl sticker 19.8 x 8.8 x 5.9 m 2019

A gallery-specific sound installation consists of 4 channels of sound source and lights which places at the same point. At the beginning and the end of the path there was a couple of sign that adapted from Aomori City traffic signs with a twist on it. This work installed at Aomori Contemporary Art Centre, Gallery A. The acoustic of the circled room gives a natural echo to the sound. The sound moving from one sign to another sign in order to give an indirect direction for the audience to move. An approach to identify how the audiences react to the subtle direction that appears as sound and lights.

Sound configuration of the traffic light in the city has a subtle instruction for the pedestrian. It directs people indirectly by its panning sound mechanism to crossing the street, especially to help the blind people crossing the road. Considering the phenomenon is a part of our life as an urban residence, daily life unconsciously already constructed by the ‘instructions’. This mechanism is the closest example where every element that appears in different forms such as the eye-catching traffic sign and the loud sound is unconsciously giving is the instruction, showing the rules and the convention.
